Description
While WhistlePig’s standard 10-Year Small Batch is a masterfully blended, highly consistent rye, their single barrel program offers a glimpse into the unique, unblended anomalies of their aging warehouses. For this release, the San Diego Barrel Boys traveled directly to WhistlePig’s farm in Shoreham, Vermont. After evaluating candidate barrels from the aging inventory, they pulled this specific, standout cask to bottle as an exclusive private selection. With only 130 bottles in existence, this is a true micro-allocation that cannot be replicated.
The Flavor Profile
What makes this particular barrel so special is how beautifully it departs from standard rye expectations. Instead of a purely dry, herbaceous, and peppery experience, this single barrel leans heavily into luxurious dessert notes. The 100% rye mash bill still provides a robust backbone of structural spice, but it is layered under dense, sweet pastry notes that are usually lost when barrels are blended together.
Tasting Notes
-
Nose: High-toned baking spices and subtle, earthy herbal tones—offering a highly complex aromatic profile.
-
Palate: Bold, rich, and decadently sweet. Dominant notes of thick maple syrup and rich Boston cream pie, followed by a warm, comforting note of cinnamon-dusted cheesecake.
-
Finish: Exceptionally satisfying and long, with the sweet, spiced cheesecake and vanilla notes lingering on the palate.
Why It’s Special
Single barrel ryes of this caliber are a masterclass in wood selection. The San Diego Barrel Boys picked a barrel that perfectly balances the fiery punch of 100% rye with the rich, caramelized oak sugars of a beautifully matured cask. Once these 130 bottles are gone, this exact flavor profile is gone forever.
