The Backstory

While the first three entries in WhistlePig’s “FarmStock” line focused heavily on showcasing the steady progression of their estate-grown Vermont rye, Crop No. 004 took a historic and experimental detour. Released in the spring of 2020, “HomeStock” was born out of quarantine.

WhistlePig shipped crowd-blending kits containing three distinct whiskey components to thousands of fans and spirits enthusiasts at home. Through a massive, virtual collective tasting, the community experimented, submitted recipes, and voted on the final blend. The winning recipe is an incredibly innovative “tri-grain” mash bill that has been praised for its approachable, smooth, yet character-forward complexity.

The Blend Composition

• 45% Rye (4-year-old Vermont Straight Rye aged in local Vermont White Oak)

• 30% Wheat (5-year-old Canadian Wheat Whiskey aged in Char #1 barrels)

• 25% Barley (5-year-old Canadian Barley/Malt Whiskey aged in Char #3 barrels)

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Bright and inviting, dominated by orange zest, fresh lemon peel, and warm waves of dark caramel with a subtle, peppery oak undertone.

• Palate: Light and incredibly well-rounded. The bold baking spices of the Vermont rye are softened by sweet cookie dough, honeyed cereal, toasted walnuts, and a creamy vanilla softness contributed by the wheat.

• Finish: Long and warming, highlighting sweet toasted grain, fresh mint, malted biscuits, and a lingering touch of root ginger.
