The eighth installment of WhistlePig’s highly coveted, annual limited-edition The Boss Hog series is a monumental liquid chronicle of strength and independence. Drawing inspiration from historical geography, this edition commemorates the legendary Filipino chieftain and warrior Lapulapu. In 1521, Lapulapu successfully defended his island home against the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan. This bottle serves as the epic sequel to The Boss Hog VII: Magellan’s Atlantic, completing a virtual journey around the globe.

A Complex Dual-Rum Cask Finish

To mirror Lapulapu’s island heritage, WhistlePig’s blending team sourced rare, small-batch rum barrels from a single island in the Philippines. After spending nearly 18 years maturing in new charred American oak, the robust straight rye whiskey undergoes a unique dual-cask finishing process:

1. It is first rested in 7-year-old small-batch Philippine rum casks to slowly introduce delicate tropical fruits and warm spices.

2. It is then moved to 10-year-old small-batch Philippine rum casks for a shorter, intense finish that imparts deeper notes of dark molasses, caramelized sugars, and toffee.

Unfiltered and Bottled at Proof

True to the five promises of The Boss Hog series, each bottle is pulled from a single barrel, left unfiltered, and bottled at its natural cask strength. Crowning each bottle is a beautifully detailed, hand-detailed pewter stopper depicting Lapulapu standing guard with his shield and sword.

Tasting Notes

• Aroma: Deeply aromatic. Lush vanilla and warm baking spices give way to delicate tropical notes of underripe banana, citrus zest, and rich molasses.

• Palate: Powerful and structured. Fresh-ground cinnamon and lively orange peel are balanced beautifully by rich butterscotch, toffee, and toasted oak. The signature rye black pepper assertively anchors the sip.
