Description
Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel is a cornerstone of bourbon history. Named after Elmer T. Lee (1919–2013), the Buffalo Trace Master Distiller who revolutionized the industry by commercially releasing the world’s first single barrel bourbon (Blanton’s) in 1984, this bottle stands as a direct continuation of his legacy. Until his passing in 2013, Lee personally hand-selected the barrels used for his namesake bourbon.
Production & Mash Bill:
-
Mash Bill: Unlike the Weller line (wheated) or standard Buffalo Trace (low-rye Mash Bill #1), Elmer T. Lee is crafted using Mash Bill #2, which features a slightly higher rye content (estimated at 12–15%). It shares this mash bill with sister labels like Blanton’s, Rock Hill Farms, and Hancock’s President’s Reserve.
-
Proof: It is consistently bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
-
Age: While the bottle carries no age statement (NAS), the whiskey is generally understood to be aged between 8 to 14 years before bottling.
-
Single Barrel Nature: Since each bottle is drawn from an individual cask, subtle variations in flavor, color, and aroma exist from bottle to bottle.
Flavor Profile:
-
Nose: Elegant and highly inviting, characterized by a sweet harmony of honey, vanilla extract, and rich caramel, balanced by hints of orange peel, floral notes, and a touch of dusty, toasted oak.
-
Palate: Medium-bodied and silky on the mouthfeel. It delivers an incredibly smooth, easy-drinking palate of caramelized brown sugar, vanilla cream, and dried fruits, coupled with a gentle kick of rye spice, cinnamon, and a soft hint of pipe tobacco.
-
Finish: Medium to long, tapering off with a clean, gentle dryness. It leaves behind lingering traces of sweet corn, warm oak tannins, and a mild, tingling rye spice without any harsh alcohol burn.
Legacy & Availability:
Because of its rich history, distinct bottle design, and association with the father of single barrel whiskey, Elmer T. Lee has transitioned from a reasonably priced shelf-staple to a highly allocated, heavily sought-after prize. It is highly prized by collectors for its effortless sippability and classic Kentucky character
